Boy, we have been hammered by the oppressive and unrelenting heat lately. I just wanted to remind folks that while we humans can sweat and cool off a variety of ways, our pets have only a few tricks in their bags for cooling so be careful with your little fur friends. Be sure shade and water are available outside even if they are only out for a few minutes. Be sure you are mindful of pets outside and don't leave them out for more than a few minutes without monitoring them and for heaven's sake don't ask them to exercise in the heat. We won't even talk about how hot the car is.... even the air conditioner has a hard time cooling off the car.
We have been happy to note how few heat related incidents we have had lately, but still be careful. Most of the emergencies lately have been intestinal foreign bodies or other blockages, illnesses and accidents like broken legs and slipped discs. A few poisonings have popped up most notably grapes (which are quite toxic to dogs), and venomous insect stings are a summer time problem as usual. We are keeping track of the diagnoses in general that our doctors are making and will begin a regular blogging of the top diagnoses to help you be mindful of what is going on out there. In the mean time stay cool and be well.
